Does It Hurt?
Does It Hurt?
In a word... YES! The amount of pain differs from person to person, tattoo to tattoo. Every persons pain threshold differs so it is very difficult to answer this questions definitively.
The thicker/muscular parts of the body are, generally, going to hurt less (arms & legs) than the bonier parts (feet & chest). Particularly sensitive areas are ribs, stomach, inner thigh & lower back.
Don't let the thought of pain be the deciding factor of whether you get a Tattoo or where it will be placed. The pain will be over as soon as the Tattoo is finished. In most cases it is a tolerable pain, similar to a hot scratching feeling. Your Tattoo will be there long after and you should be happy with it's placement & size.
It is a good idea to eat something 30 minutes or so before your session. Nerves & low blood sugar can intensify the feelings.
Remember, pretty much everyone is nervous when they sit in the chair. The first minute or so is, generally, the worst. Your body will release it natural defense system, Endorphins. This will help to relieve the discomfort and you will gradually get used to the sensation and calm down.
If at any time you feel unwell or uncomfortable during your Tattoo tell your Artist you need to take a break. If you are having a longer session it is a good idea to take a break for a drink and maybe something to eat to keep your levels up.
Do NOT drink Alcohol before attending your tattoo session. You may think it will numb the pain but it will, in fact, increase the chance of fainting. Bleeding can also be an issue. It is advised that you do not drink heavily up to 24 hours before having your Tattoo session. Alcohol thins the blood & your body needs time to get back to normal.
